WebP is a new image format that supports both lossless (like PNG) and lossy (like JPG) formats. With Data Saver, the optimization server performs an automatic conversion to the new WebP format. Sometimes a single image can weigh more than dozens of scripts and style sheets. Images and rich media are among the slowest components to download. In addition, HTTP/2 can cache future resources so that they can be instantly loaded when needed.
Instead of having dozens of connections, there’s just one co-ordinated TCP connection, cutting down on the server back-and-forth traditionally associated with HTTP - thus helping you get get your content faster. HTTP/2 is a supercharged version of HTTP. Where possible, the optimization servers request the content via HTTP/2 instead of HTTP. There are several steps to the optimization process that Google implements to bring this all together. The server performs automatic compression, minification, conversion of images and other elements to save you precious bandwidth. We’ve been experimenting with this updated design for a few months and - based on your input - have made dozens of improvements to the layout, most notably adjusting the thumbnail sizes and showing more videos on larger screens.Data Saver works by passing Chrome’s network traffic through Google’s servers. According to YouTube, this adjustment has been in testing for the past “few months” and was briefly spotted in testing this August. That said, YouTube is removing some content shelves as part of this cleaner design.
The general layout, including sections like Recommended, remains mostly unchanged. Channel icons are now included to make it “easier to recognize your favorite creators.” In practice, instead of seeing five videos across, you might only see four, with eight per shelf. This also allows for longer video titles that provide more context before clicking. The video site is switching to “larger, richer thumbnails” that make possible higher-resolution previews. The Google site is also rolling out queuing and “Don’t recommend this channel.” YouTube this morning announced a homepage redesign focused on helping you “find the next great video to watch.” Available for desktop web and tablets, it takes the form of larger thumbnails to aid browsing.
